Dental photography - from clinical documentation to professional visual content

Basic course information
The training is structured over two consecutive days - the first day is focused on the basics and standardized protocols in clinical dental photography, and the second day is dedicated to advanced techniques: studio, portrait, object and art dental photography. Participants work with real equipment, accessories and lighting, receiving individual guidance and feedback.
The course format includes theory, demonstrations, and hands-on practice.

During the course participants will learn:
- The basic technical principles of dental photography and working in Manual mode;
- Correct selection and use of cameras, lenses, flashes and accessories;
- Creation of standardized extraoral and intraoral clinical photographs;
- Control of light, reflections, angle and composition in clinical and specialized shots;
- Working in a studio environment and building different lighting setups;
- Portrait photography – styles, posing, lighting and expression;
- Object and art dental photography with a focus on detail, texture and form;
- Image analysis and real-time adjustments under the guidance of the lecturer.

Prof. Todor Uzunov
Leading expert in digital prosthetic dental medicine and implantology
Professor Todor Uzunov is a prominent specialist in the field of prosthetic dental medicine and dental implantology, with over 23 years of professional experience. He is a national expert in "Prosthetic Dental Medicine" at the Expert Council on Specialized Dental Activities of the Ministry of Health and the head of the Department of Prosthetic Dental Medicine at the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Medical University - Sofia. Professor Uzunov is the chairman of the Scientific Committee of the national Scientific Congress of the Bulgarian Dental Association and the chairman of the editorial board of the journal "DentaMedica." In his academic career, Professor Uzunov has published over 120 scientific articles and has participated in numerous scientific congresses, symposiums, and conferences in Bulgaria and abroad. He has been a university lecturer for 20 years at the Faculty of Dental Medicine - Sofia, where he shares his knowledge and experience in the field of digital prosthetic dental medicine, dental implantology, bruxism - prevention and therapy, restoration in tooth wear, diagnosis of temporomandibular joint disorders, and the 3Shape ecosystem. Professor Uzunov is an active member of professional organizations, serving as the chairman of the editorial board of the journal "Dental Medicine" and the president of the Sofia Dental Meeting Association. He has received various awards and distinctions, including a DIPLOMA for the most successful scientific development by doctoral students for the period 2003-2005 in the field of Dentistry and the honorary award "Signum laudis" for outstanding contributions to the functioning and development of the Medical University - Sofia.
Dr. Dimitar Kosturkov
Specialist in Endodontics, Digital Dentistry, and International Lecturer.
Dr. Dimitar Kosturkov graduated from the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Sofia in 2014 with honors. He works at the Uzunov Dental dental clinic, where he practices microscopically assisted endodontics and treatment of dental caries. In 2016, he became a full-time doctoral student at the Department of Conservative Dentistry at the Faculty of Dental Medicine-Sofia. In 2019, he obtained the ONS 'Doctor' after successfully defending his dissertation. The same year, he became an assistant professor at the department. In 2020, he obtained the specialty 'Operative Dentistry and Endodontics'. Since 2021, he has been a chief assistant professor at the Department of Conservative Dentistry, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Medical University-Sofia. Author of a large number of publications in Bulgarian and international journals and a participant in scientific projects. Dr. Kosturkov's main interests are related to endodontics, treatment of dental caries, dental photography, digital dentistry. Member of the Bulgarian Dental Association, Control Commission of the Bulgarian Dental Association, Bulgarian Scientific Society of Dental Medicine, Sofia Dental Meeting Association. Lecturer at Inspire Dental Academy and Dentstore Bulgaria. International endodontic lecturer at Kerr endodontics, Carl Zeiss.

DAY 1 - Basics of dental photography in clinical practice
Theoretical part
Introduction to dental photography:
- The role of photography in modern dental medicine;
- Clinical documentation, diagnosis and follow-up;
- Communication with the patient and the dental laboratory;
- Photography as an educational and marketing tool.
Camera equipment and technical basics:
- DSLR and mirrorless systems – selection and rationale;
- Lenses for dental photography (macro, portrait);
- Flashes – ring flash and twin flash;
- Key parameters: ISO; Aperture; Shutter speed; White balance;
- Working in Manual mode;
- Most common technical errors.
Accessories and work in the oral cavity:
- Dental mirrors – types and application;
- Retractors – selection and correct positioning;
- Anti-fog techniques;
- Light modifiers;
- Patient preparation;
- Operator position and ergonomics.
Standardized photographic protocols:
- Distant extraoral shots: portrait; smile; profile;
- Close extraoral shots:
- Intraoral shots: frontal; lateral; occlusal;
- Angle, distance and centering;
- Control of light and reflections.

- Control of shadows, contrast and depth.
Portrait photography – styles, technique and execution:
- The portrait as a visual image in professional and medical settings;
- Difference between documentary, studio and artistic portrait.
